DIY Steps to make a block printing khadi dress

Here's how to make your Khadi dress look unique with Blockprinting

Although block printing has been around from thousands of years, technology and commercialization have made it more easily and readily visible. From local merchants to high profile designers, all have essentially presented us with their unique block printed collections at one time or another.
The good thing is that unlike many other processes involved in making those high fashion clothes, you can do block printing at home, and it is fun, affordable and a great way to give your old dresses a new life and look. All you need is your fabric; of course, printing block, acrylic paint, fabric medium, sponge or foam roller and an iron, and you are all set to jazz up your dress, cushions, curtains, suit or whatever it is that you want. You can get all of these materials in the market or make them yourself at home, if you really want to do it all by yourself.

How to make the printing block

You can make the carving block using wood, rubber or linoleum. Cut the material in your preferred size and shape. Draw the design you want to print on the material and then carve it accordingly. And, there! You have your own DIY printing block. Although, you can always buy a printing block from the market in case you have less time or can’t find the material. Since many people have inclined towards DIY art form in the recent years, you can easily find a suitable printing block in your preferred shape and size. The next thing to do is to get your Khadi dress out and start printing your own designs. But before you do that make sure that your dress is clean and wrinkle free. So, wash it and iron it to
make it all set for block printing.

Here’s a step by step guide that you can easily follow:

1. Mark measured points on your dress where you want to print the design.
2. Bring out your acrylic paint kit and choose the color you want to use or make your custom colors by mixing different colors.
3. Mix this customized acrylic paint with fabric medium to get more neat, softer and more flexible finish.
4. Dip the foam roller in the paint mixture, and in case you are using a sponge, dip it in the paint and place it on a flat surface.
Tip: Do not dip the printing block directly into the paint as it can give you messy and uneven results.
5. Apply the paint on the printing block using the foam roller or dab the block on the sponge.
6. Press the block against the marked points on your dress.
Tip: Don’t forget to recoat your printing block after every 34 attempts otherwise you’ll get uneven color and applying more color over the same spot can make it look flawed and spoil all your efforts.
7. Let the paint dry.
8. Iron over the prints for a few seconds until you notice a slight change in the tone. (This is necessary so the paint settles down for good.)

So, what are you waiting for? Follow these steps and create your own masterpiece, today!
